The following is the text of "Uninvited".
It is a paraphrase of part of the essay "The Time of the End is the Time of No Room", published on page 72 of Thomas Merton's 1965 book, Raids on the Unspeakable.
Uninvited
This world, this uncaring inn,
this world, this broken-hearted inn:
Into this world,
Christ has come uninvited.
No room at all for Him,
He cannot be at home.
Christ is out of place here;
His place is with others
for whom there is no room.
His place is with those
who do not belong,
rejected by power,
regarded as weak,
discredited,
denied the status of persons,
tortured,
bombed,
exterminated.
With those
for whom there is no room
Christ is mysteriously
present in the world.
